Lille
This little family from Lille, a paralysed old woman with her daughter and two little children,
was forced out of Lille the 25th of December 1917.
They were transferred to Belgium, staying there three weeks
when they suffered cruelly from cold and hunger,
having been reduced to exchanging a few pieces of soap for potatoes.
They are now being taken care of the American Red Cross

Many of the children who come to this dispensary are undernourished and under-fed;
menaced by the plague of tuberculosis. Red Cross nurse is alertly watching the doctor

This little boy was found in bed beside his dead mother,
scolding and striking her breast because she no longer kept him warm.
He is now at the colony of the Comité Franco-Américain
pour la Protection des Enfants de la Frontière, Yvetot, Normandy

A little boy who has been injured by an obus in a hospital a few kilometers from the fighting lines.
This ward of the hospital is established in what was formerly a chapel.
Just before the picture was taken the little boy received a Croix de Guerre
which had been awarded to his brother at the front, and who fearing that he might be killed
sent it back to his godson to keep for him
