A deep impression has been made upon this child by the hardships
he has undergone at the hands of the Germans
between 1914 and 1920

This mother of six children left Lille December 25th, arriving in the department of Charente Inférieure a month later.
They spent the bitterest cold of the year in Belgium, the Germans would not give them any coal
and the mother was forced to go about in the night,
so that the Germans would not see her, gathering here and there little pieces of wood wherever
between 1914 and 1920

Six-year old Tildy helps a little in the beet work, on a Colorado farm near Rocky Ford.
Her father is German.
He said:
"I don't work my children until they are older.
" Another German farmer nearby said the same.
Another father said:
"Americans don't work their kids the way foreigners do.

Nothing was known about this child
who was sent to the Comite France-Americain pour la protection des enfants de la frontière
by an an evacuation station in the north.
After writing it was learned that "When the German troops passed through Armentières (Nord),
little Antoine, his brother Michel and his sister Georgette were living with their aunt,
who soon after left her village to go with her children and nephews to Erquinghem.
In November 1914, the refugees were obliged to leave this town and the aunt confided
the three children to the care of a friend with whom they remained for 23 months.
Last June as Erquinghem was bombarded the children were sent to the hospital of Hazebrouck
and from there to the committee.
They have never had a word from their father, mother, five brothers and sisters
who have remained in the invaded district

Dixmude
Versailles
Little Belgian orphans who retreated from Dixmude
with Belgian soldiers when the Germans passed through Belgium in November 1914.
These children suffered from ill nourishment, cold and fatigue during the winter 1914, and 1915
and were rescued by the Comite Franco-Amercain pour la protection des Enfants de la Frontière.
Now at Les Clarisses at Versailles, under special protection of Countess de Viel Castle,
