Le 23 février 1916, Provence II quitte Toulon, son port d’attache pour les opérations dans la Méditerranée,

avec à son bord un contingent de 2000 militaires dont un important détachement du IIIe Régiment d’Infanterie Coloniale destiné au renfort des troupes,

400 hommes d’équipage et environ 200 chevaux et mulets de l’armée.

Le 26 février 1916, au large du Cap de Matapan (Grèce) (38°58 de latitude Nord et 18°59 de longitude), Provence II est touchée à tribord

par une torpille du sous-marin allemand U35, du Commandant Von Lothar de la Perrière, à 15 heures.

L’ordre d’évacuer est donné et le Capitaine de Frégate Vesco conserve son sang-froid pour organiser l’évacuation.

Eugène Pian, qui pourtant n’est pas de garde à ce moment-là, rejoint le poste de Télégraphie Sans Fil où se trouve Joseph Huby, son adjoint,

avec qui il envoie des SOS. 17 minutes après son torpillage, Provence II coule.

Tout comme le Commandant Vesco et d’autres membres de l’Etat-major et de l’équipage, Eugène Pian reste à son poste jusqu’au bout et est englouti

avec Provence II quand le navire sombre.

Les rescapés sont recueillis par le navire hôpital français Canada, le torpilleur français Fantassin, l’aviso britannique Marguerite

et le torpilleur français Cavalier.

Seuls 870 hommes ont survécu à ce naufrage.

SS Minneapolis

SS Minneapolis, built by Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast in 1900 and owned at the time of her loss by Atlantic Transport Co. Ltd., Belfast,

was a British passenger steamer.

On March 23rd, 1916, Minneapolis, on a voyage from Marseille to Alexandria carrying 60 tons horse fodder, was torpedoed by the German submarine U-35 (Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière), 195 miles of E1/2N Malta.

12 persons were lost.

The destroyer Sheldrake rescued 166 of her crew and 1 passenger.

Minneapolis evidently remained afloat for some hours after the attack and an attempt was made to tow her to Malta.

She was towed in turn by by the destroyer HMS Lydiard, the sloop HMS Nasturtium and finally by the tugs Veteran and Milon, but she sank on March 25.

She was under the command of Captain F. O. Hasker at the time of her loss.

Marquette

Film

When the British transport ship Marquette was sunk in the Aegean Sea on 23 October 1915, 32 New Zealanders were killed, 10 of them nurses,

but their deaths need never have happened.

The Marquette was not a hospital ship, marked with a red cross, so it sailed without the protection of the Geneva Convention and was therefore fair game

for German submarines.

Early in October 1915 the medical staff of No. 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital in Egypt were told to pack up.

By the 19th they were boarding the Marquette in Alexandria.

There were 36 nurses plus eight officers, nine non-commissioned officers and 77 orderlies of the New Zealand Medical Corps.

The Marquette was on its way to Salonika (Thessaloniki), where the British and French had been supporting Serbian forces since September.

Also on the large troopship were the 500 men and officers of the ammunition column of the British 29th Division, plus 500 mules, some horses

and many wagons loaded with ammunition.

The large troopship initially had an escort to shepherd it through the hostile waters, and its passengers took part in lifeboat drills.

Despite some talk of submarine attacks, the nurses were relaxed.

Sister Edith Popplewell later wrote that

‘there were rumours of torpedoes, of course, and we had lifebelt drills for two days, but we really hardly took it seriously I’m afraid’.

Tara

Tara was originally built as the passenger vessel SS Hibernia for the London & North Western Railway Co. and was requisitioned in 1915

and amred with 3 x 6 pdr. guns.

On November 5th, 1915, Tara was sunk by the German submarine U-35 (Waldemar Kophamel), 8 miles off El-Sallum. 12 persons were lost in the explosion.

The liveboats were towed by U-35 to El-Sallum, where the crew were taken prisoner by the Libyan authorities, who turned the prisoners

over to members of the local Senoussi tribe.

Tara's crew would spend 135 days in captivity near Bir Hakkim, Libya, with four men dying during this time.

They would eventually be rescued in a daring operation on 21 March 1916, along with the crew of the SS Moorina (sunk the same day by U-35).
