Photograph taken from a branch of Al Hejaz railway to Hafir El Auja and El Qusaima via Beersheba
in Negev Desert.

The Ottoman forces and their German and Austrian Habsburg allies were holding a defence
and supply line along Wadi El Arish during the World War I Sinai Campaign in 1914-early 1917 CE (major battles: Rumana, Maqdaba and Rafah).
There were Ottoman military camps equipped with field hospitals, watering facilities
and ammunition stock at the town of El Arish (fortress and major camp), El Maqdaba (major camp), Abu Aweigilla and El Ruafa (outpost), El Qusaima (outpost) and Hafir El Auja (major camp), plus Nakhl (fortress) and Bir Hassana (outpost) in central Sinai and other westward water points
and outposts in North Sinai.
Also, the Ottomans (German Engineers) constructed a branch from Al Hejaz railway to Hafir El Auja and El Qusaima via Beersheba to supply and evacuate their forces (north-south),
while the British Royal Engineers were constructing a railway and water pipeline along Darb El Arish or El Darb El Sultani (ancient Way of Horus or Via Maris)
to advance eastwards to Rafah and Palestine.
The first asphalt road between El Qantara and El Arish was constructed
by Shell Company in 1952-54 CE.
