POMILIO

Many thanks to Kees Kort for

his clarifications and comments.

Comment of Kees Kort

It is the Pomilio P.C.

dating from 1916,

an Italian two-seat reconnaissance plane fitted with a 260 hp Fiat A-12 water-cooled engine.

The radiators are positioned vertically, blocking a part from the view of the observer, who was in the front seat.

Comment of Kees Kort

Further developments of Pomilio were the P.D. and P.E. of which the P.E.

was used by

the U.S. Signal Corps.

Mark the serial P.3757

at the side of the fuselage, where P could define

the factory Pomilio.

Kees Kort Comments

The 22 October 1917,

Italian pilot Baldioli flew this Pomilio PE

from New York (Langley Field)

to Mineola airfield,

about 540 km covered in 2 hours 20 minutes.

Kees Kort Comments

This Pomilio PE was shipped to the United States together with other Italian aeroplanes from Italy when a steamer left Italy on 1 August 1917.

The machines were delivered to Langley Field

on 21 August 1917.

This machine was presented to the United States by Italy to avoid the cost of return shipping to Italy.

The picture was taken

on Oct. 22, 1917

and not Aug. 1st.

These seem to be photographs taken by staff

at Air Service of Mineola Field and were sent to the Signal Corps photo section at

a much later date

with very little information about the planes shown.
