Flanking the upper half of the giant figure are a Russian bear with its mouth open

in agony and mid-riff bones exposed, an aged, toothless and hairless British lion

with a monkey, representing Japan, sitting in the loop of its tail, and on the left,

a frightened Gallic cock representing France.
