Strangers in a strange land.
Although a long, long way from home, a common interest makes for a complete understanding between these five men who helped to supply the Roumanian civil population
with American clothing and food.
They were members of the American Red Cross unit operating out of Bucarest.
Ordinarily this group would be found at Syracuse, N.Y., Phil. Pekin, Davenport, Ia.,
and Goshen, N.Y.,
respectively, for reading from left to right they are:
Maj. R.B. Rulison,
Maj. Richard Penn Smith,
Sing Ki Wow,
Maj. Dan J. McCarthy
and Maj. Burke C. Hamilton.
When the Roumanian army mobilized Russia sent a small contingent of Chinese who have acted
as cooks and laborers first for the Russian armies, later for the Roumanians and now as helpers
for the American Red Cross unit

Destitute and ragged children waiting for clothing at the American Red Cross Relief Station in Jassy.
Every child was thoroughly bathed and scrubbed before getting any fresh clothes.
Although this picture was taken in mid-winter, many of the children, as may be seen from
the photograph, were without shoes or stockings.
The clothing of others consisted only of a shirt.

Every two weeks the A.R.C. visits the numerous mountain villages of Serbia
with clothing, meat, flour, beans and soap.
These supplies are set down in an open space and the destitute people in the town
and from the surrounding district line up by the hundreds.
The R.C. worker with the apron is Miss Elizabeth Haile, of Louisville, Ky.,
the two at the table are
Major Roger Perkins, of Cleveland, Ohio.,
and Miss Ruth Harrison, of Cincinnati.
Note the boquets of flowers on the table.
They are presented by the mountaineers, who if especially pleased
with their rations will slyly slip an egg or two onto the table

Hour's argument over one plastre.
A kneeling Turk in the market place at Skoplje, Serbia is trying to buy
a garment from the Christian lady.
He has been there for an hour arguing over the price, a difference of one plastre.
The (?) in the foreground, who, by the way, uses his own shoe polish,
has been an interested spectator throughout.
This is one of the towns where the American Red Cross established
a hospital and feeding station for Serbia's destitute
